Alternative Shopping Tips During Coronavirus!

Home cooking has seen a major uptick. Wholesale food purveyors of every stripe have opened their doors to the general public during the Covid-19 crisis in order to increase cash flow. You can take advantage…

An innovative approach to grocery market shopping has been enacted by DeCicco & Sons’ Westchester locations in Ardsley, Armonk, Brewster, Harrison, Larchmont, Millwood, Pelham and Somers. They have partnered with Open Table, an online restaurant reservation service. Shoppers can now book a time slot to shop. Hopes are it will eliminate waiting on lines, though walk-ins will still be welcomed.

Owners John, Joe and Frank DeCicco say customers with a reservation must show up 5 minutes prior their reservation and walk into the store for confirmation. DeCicco & Sons, founded out of a small Bronx storefront in 1973, has in recent years introduced a number of modern protocols to their markets. www.deciccoandsons.com www.opentable.com/groceries

Wholesale food supplier to the food service industry Ace Endico based in Brewster, N.Y., has a retail arm called Ace Endico Marketplace. You can visit the market, or get home delivery in the Bronx, Westchester, Putnam, and Fairfield Counties by visiting their website. They sell a wide range of food items and paper goods at good prices. Minimum delivery orders are $200. Monday thru Saturday van delivery. Recently went on shopping trips to both locations and came away with reasonably priced hard-to-find goods. Ace Endico, 80 International Blvd., Brewster. 914-347-3131 Ace Endico, 188 W. Lincoln Ave., Mt. Vernon. 914-699-5592 www.aceendico.com

Closed for a time during coronavirus restrictions, the bakery recently reopened. So happy to have them back! I have been stopping into The Bread Factory on Grove St., New Rochelle, for years. It’s a local gem. The Orza family has a long history in the bakery business, and I must say while a sit here enjoying a slice of their fresh rye bread toasted with a smear of butter, their goods are as fresh and satisfying as ever. Depending on the occasion, we bring home their delicious rye, cranberry raison, walnut bread, baguettes, multi-grain semolina, onion petit pain, and their extraordinary sausage bread. Just heat up a piece and devour. They do pastries and cakes, too. Special Hint: the shop and factory sell wholesale and retail. They supply some of the best restaurants in the county. Friendly staff at the counter. Get there early for the best selection. The Bread Factory, 30 Grove St., New Rochelle. 914-637-9514 www.sonnyorzabread.com

Shop where the restaurants do. Big wholesale cash & carry foodservice supplier Restaurant Depot has opened its doors to the public across the country. They operate 135 warehouses nationwide. Here in Westchester they have stores in Port Chester and Mount Vernon. They are the restaurant industry equivalent to Costco. The company sells a wide variety of food products, paper goods and equipment. Big bulk is the order of the day, but if your household can handle It, or you form a group of friends and neighbors, RD may be a good option. They are open 7 days. You can easily register for a free temporary pass inside. Restaurant Depot, 650 S. Columbus Ave., Mount Vernon, 914-665-6868; and 305 S. Regent St., Port Chester, 914-935-0220. www.restaurantdepot.com

According to a release from Wegman’s corporate, the much-anticipated grand opening of the huge Wegman’s Food Market off Westchester Ave. in Harrison has been postponed. It is now scheduled to open sometime this fall. Took a sneak peek at the construction site last week as they were putting up the new signage. www.wegmans.com
