Youth Ministry Helps the Needy

During the holiday season, St. Joseph’s Church in Bronxville was hard at work giving to the needy. In early December, the Parish Youth Organization, led by Antoinette Gilligan, sorted more than 2000 wrapped gifts for the less fortunate. The gifts were from the Church Giving Tree as well at St Joseph School families and CCD Families. The items ranged from infant toys to adult items, including blankets and sheets. Some of the receiving organizations are various Parishes in the Bronx and Yonkers, Temporary Housing Institutions for Women and their Children in New York City, Community Centers in the Bronx, Permanent Residences for Children in Rockland and Westchester, and Multi-Service Centers for Immigrants in Yonkers.

Award-Winning Author Visits St. Joseph's

Particia Polacco, award-winning children’s author and illustrator recently visited with children at St. Joseph’s School in Bronxville. Polacco tells warm family tales drawn from her own childhood among an extended immigrant family of grandparents and cousins. She often bases her books on real-life experiences, such as the discovery of a doll and letter from her mother’s childhood.

“I would have to say all of my books are probably based on family stories. But remember, I was raised in a household where the old members of my family lived with us. And there was something wonderful about sitting at their knee and listening to how things were. And how it’s interesting -- that’s what I’ve become in my family. I’m the one who now tells them how things were. It gave us a sense of our place. It gave us a sense of our birth order. It gave us a sense that we were loved long before we were even born.”
