Dining Out
Joe’s Quarry Reopens as a Pub on Marbledale Road!
By Morris Gut
Just over 6 years ago a plaque was hung in the doorway here dedicating the grand opening of the original Joe’s Quarry Inn inscribed with a folksy theme: “We dedicate our restaurant to the G.I. Joes who have served our country well along with other Joes who have made an important impact on our lives.”
The plaque still hangs there as new owners Peter Iodice and Roger Fawn take the reins of their fully refurbished space, now called Joe’s Quarry Pub. And a true totally casual retro pub it is: friendly, full of stories shared daily by Edward the barkeep, who had owned the old Waverly Square Bar & Grill in Eastchester for 15 years. The beer and spirits are in stock as is the ‘best cup of Joe’ in town, and the staff is ready for summer with its rustic outdoor deck and Tiki Bar where you can schmooze thru all those coming balmy days and nights.
There’s a new coat of paint in the dining room, clay red and beige walls highlighted by Leroy Neiman prints and movie posters, and the classic ‘When Johnny Comes Marching Home’ hanging behind the cozy bar. There’s booth and table seating along with paper placemats. A large mirror takes up the rear wall. And so here you are, ready to dig into some darn good pub grub while watching the latest events of the day on the house TVs.
The reasonably priced menu has been pared down a bit to essential tavern favorites and with a few surprises. Fine starters and finger foods include: fried calamari, fried jumbo shrimp, crab nuggets and clam strips all served with dipping sauces. Quarry chicken tenders come with a choice of BBQ sauce or honey mustard. Then there are fried mozzarella sticks, Buffalo wings, famous cheese fries, Quarry onions, and a tasty version of the Philly cheese steak served on toasted buttered roll with melted cheddar cheese and onion.
Joe’s burgers are big and juicy with choice of toppings. One of our favorites comes loaded with bacon and choice of American, cheddar or Swiss cheese. Classic Quarry dogs are served on a platter and there are several versions to choose from: melted cheese dogs, chili dogs with house made spicy chili, and Texas dogs served with baked beans and all the trimmings.
It’s hard to find steamers in these parts, but they have a Pot of Steamers here, a big portion loaded into a metal bowl with side of butter. That’s a good one to share!
Additional main courses include: classic chicken sandwich, grilled seasoned chicken breast served on a toasted buttered roll with lettuce, tomato and mayo. New England mussels are a good bet, as are a dozen raw clams served over crushed ice with all the trimmings, fresh raw oysters, and Quarry clams, six clams chopped and stuffed with crab meat.
A seafood combination platter includes: fried shrimp, clams strips, crab nuggets and fries. There’s also ‘Chicken Dinner Delights’: choice of marsala, parmigiana or francese style; a New York strip steak served with pasta or fries; and such pasta favorites as: linguine with white or red clam sauce, and penne primavera with vegetables.
Good sides served a la carte include: French fries cooked in peanut oil, corn on the cob topped with hot melted butter, beer battered onion rings served in a basket, and a special rice of the day.
Joe’s Quarry Pub is located at 174 Marbledale Road, Tuckahoe. The pub is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. Same menu served all day. Menu price range: $5.30 for classic Quarry dogs; burgers from $7.95; chicken parmigiana for $12.95 to the seafood combo platter for $24.95. Cozy bar/lounge and cocktails. Major credit cards. TVs. Casual dress. Outdoor patio. Large groups are advised to call ahead. Phone: 914-361-1919.
